Mr Gorton’s Gossip

Dear Alkimos PS Families
Since our last newsletter, we have enjoyed the first assembly of the year, hosted beautifully by CR 9 and 10. We were reminded about the history of our great school, hearing about why our four factions were given the names of Greek gods and goddesses, aligned with the Alkimos theme. There was some amazing acting out of Hera, Poseidon, Areas and Apollo! It was so nice to see families return to a school event as well, and to be able to acknowledge our wonderful Merit Certificate winners.
Not only could families attend the assembly, but it was also really pleasing to see the attendance and support for our Faction Cross-Country 20 May. This was another successful school event- congratulations to Hera for being this year’s winner. As always, we love the level of effort and sportsmanship shown by our students.
Letters to the Principal! In one of our whole-school approaches to Literacy, Talk 4 Writing, students are provided with rich opportunities to write about real-life topics and issues. One of the most entertaining and motivating of these is when they write to me about things that happen in our school, with the best ones being their persuasive letters, seeking to change my mind about many matters, and offering hugely creative alternatives! Here is a sample from the superstars in CR 7. Enjoy!
Reporting to Parents- Update As I mentioned in the previous newsletter, student achievement reports for Semester 1 are being prepared by teachers Due to the COVID situation affecting student and staff attendance this semester, the reporting process has been affected.
Recently, all public schools received a communication from the Department of Education, advising that schools had the options to revise reporting requirements if necessary. At Alkimos PS, Semester 1 reporting will cover the following points:
- There will be no change to what is reported to you in Semester 1 reports:
Kindy |
Pre-Primary |
Years 1-6 |
· English and Maths assessed against continuum. · Social-Emotion/General Comment. |
· Grades for English, Maths, HASS and Science. · Generic comment for PE. · Attitude, Behaviour, · Effort grades. · General Comment |
· Grades for all learning areas. · Attitude, Behaviour, Effort grades · Specific comment for English, Maths and General Comment · Generic comment for all other learning areas. |
- In the event of your child having been absent to the extent that the teacher is unable to assign a grade for a particular learning area, this will be reflected in the report.
- To enable the maximum opportunity for teachers to be able to assess and grade students, reports will be made available to you in the first week of the July school holidays. You will receive a Connect notification when these become available.
School Leadership feels it is vital that full reporting is maintained where possible, given the interruptions that has taken place over the past two years.
P. & C. Update There is more great news to report about P. & C. activities. Mother’s Day events (the on-line ordering and the raffle), raised $1,861.15. On the Federal Election Day, the sausage sizzle resulted in a $400.00. Last Friday’s Crazy Hair Day $470.90. Currently, the Cookie Dough fundraiser is being offered and so far, a very impressive $3,296, representing 824 tubs, has been raised! Excellent news!
School Development Day and WA Day A reminder that this Friday, 3 June is a School Development Day; students do not attend. Monday 6 June is a public holiday for WA Day- a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and be thankful for the wonderful state we live in.
Regards,
Andy Gorton
