Take care of yourself
Looking after yourself has always been one of Triple P’s 5 key principles. Now it’s more important than ever! Here are some tips to help you prioritise your own emotional wellbeing.
Make time for yourself
Even if you’re spending more time at home, you can still make scheduled, regular times to indulge in something enjoyable – like online coffee with a friend, a virtual exercise class or just a short break to read a magazine. This is a great circuit-breaker and you’ll feel refreshed to face the family fray again! When you really need support, call a friend to emotionally de-brief. And maybe friends and family have new ideas to keep the kids amused.
Notice how you feel
Take notice if you’re feeling upset with your child and avoid blaming the child or yourself for what’s happening. It often helps to try changing the way you think about situations. (For example, a child who interrupts or misbehaves while you’re on the phone isn’t deliberately trying to annoy you, they’re just bored or missing your attention.)
Teamwork
Try to work as a team with your partner (or any other adults sharing care of your kids). Share the load, discuss daily events and try to agree on how you’ll approach discipline. And don’t forget to notice and tell them when you can see they’re trying to make it work. Everyone will feel good about that!
