Netball Interschool Carnival re-cap – Mrs Waddell & Mrs Sparks

On Friday 23rd June, we were so proud to take 19 students from Years 5 and 6 to Butler College for the day to compete in the interschool netball carnival. Despite some very undesirable weather at times, the teams certainly didn’t let these conditions dampen their spirits at all or their efforts.

We can honestly say that our A (…for AWESOME) team and our B (…for BRILLIANT) team, played their absolute hearts out in every match. They represented our school fantastically and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship throughout each game, even when this was not always reciprocated by the opposition. Our students looked out for not only their own teammates, but all the players on the court too. We really flew our Alkimos flag high throughout the tournament and were the best sports in the competition, hands down.

Our Awesome team, captained by Ruby, who was only one of two players who has had netball experience started the matches with a team talk getting the girls fired up for action.  Our first game was an easy win against Alkimos Beach, this followed by a one goal loss against Butler, and then East Butler.  With their ego a bit damaged, it was time for spirits to be lifted with two smashing wins over John Butler 18 – 2 and Merriwa 18 – 3.  We knew that this division was tough with some schools having state players in their team.  Quinns beach proved just that, our girls played so well, a special mention to Kobe-Lee and Lily, who worked tirelessly forming a great attacking line up.  Also, to the dynamic defence, Aurora, Bianca, Imogene and Eliah who stopped Alkimos beach even scoring in our game whilst the super shooters, Ella, Rilee and Ruby shot 19 goals. We didn’t make finals, but we triumphed on the day with a 3rd place.    The girls had an amazing day and were true champions, demonstrating skills that some had learnt in 5 weeks.  Parents – you need to sign them up for a local club.

Our Brilliant team, captained by Maddison, who was such a super role model for the whole team by being so encouraging and playing by example with such might and energy, were undefeated in all 6 of their games. They left some opponents scoreless and won other games by as much as fifteen goals, making it to the Grand Final. They received such compliments from spectators on their skill, sportsmanship, and performance level. Their efforts were second to none and considering most of this team had never played netball before this term, that is a true testament to the dedication that they have all put in to practicing, not only in our sport sessions, but also every lunch time, off their own backs. Well done team! A special mention goes out to Marley for being an incredible Centre to watch…making it look so effortless and easy and to Kiara, our GS, whom had the toughest and roughest of opponents in our last game and in the Grand Final. Despite being injured, she played on with determination and grit, and scored close to 50 goals for the team in the tournament!! Superb efforts all round, I couldn’t be prouder of the whole team and the part they all played in their amazing achievements.

The teams bonded so well throughout the term’s netball sessions and the carnival left us with loads of awesome memories to take away... even some funny ones too!! (Zoe - how are your bubbly shoes now?? Hope you managed to dry them out!!!) We honestly could not be prouder of our whole netball squad, even the ones who didn’t get to come along with us on the day, but who helped to make training possible and who were always willing to step into any position.  A special mention also to Chevelle, who took some great action shots for us and stepped in to play on court too. The squad were a pleasure to coach and watch. Well done team!

Additionally, we would like to say a huge thank you to our families who came along to support us on the day, in some very chilly, windy and wet conditions. Your encouragement to the players had a big impact on their games and as usual, our Alkimos families were the best supporters on the courts and out in the biggest numbers…thank you so much for coming along.

Also, a special thank you to Mrs. Sparks for giving up her time to coach with us too. I don’t know another school where the Manager of Corporate Services, swaps the computer for a netball and gives up their time so willingly. You are a champion! We really appreciated your expertise and support.

We were also lucky to have our School Officer Mrs. McGregor come along and support us too. Thank you not only for coming to cheer us on, but also for bringing along those brollies and a very welcome warm cupper for the coaches…much appreciated! Mr. Bagnall also braved the rain to come and see the teams play. A testament to the special school we belong to, to be supported by so many staff. We thank you all. Thank you, Mr. Wulff, for making it possible for us all to attend, it is always a highlight of the year for us.

So, again, we would like to say wonderful work Team Alkimos, we can’t wait for next year already!! Congratulations and thank you to each one of you!

Kind regards
