Mr Gorton’s Gossip

It’s excellent to report upon many successes for our school from the past few weeks. Congratulations to our fantastic cross-country team for being the champion school (again!) at last Friday’s interschool carnival. Wow!
At last Monday’s Muster, visitors from the City of Wanneroo announced the winners of the design a bin sticker competition being run across many schools across the City. There was a winner from our school! Congratulations Korinne in CR 23 for winning with this wonderful design:
Another announcement made at Monday Muster was the winners of our Science Week quiz. There were so many entries! Well done to the winning students of the lovely Science Week prizes.
This week, our talented choir attended rehearsals for the WA Massed Choir. This is an annual event that showcases the amazing choirs in WA schools. Alkimos PS is scheduled to perform on Friday 15 September. It is an incredible spectacle and a brilliant opportunity for our choir to perform on such a big occasion.
Bike Safety and Moving Around in Our Community Recently, I received reports about concerning behaviour from a very small group of senior students, that involved hiding in the bushes near the basketball courts when walking to school, then jumping out to surprise cars as these went past. Staff members frequently speak to all students about the expected behaviours when riding and walking to and from school, and in our community. In Term 4, we’ve been able to book four of our classes into the excellent Constable Care Safety School, located in Maylands. This terrific day will reinforce the positive behaviours we seek from our students when using bikes and moving around the community. I hope that we can visit the Safety School again in 2024.Class Planning 2024 In our next newsletter, published on 14 September, Mr Bagnall and I will advise details of our class planning for 2024, and the steps to follow should you wish to make a request.
Connect and Respect Our school community is a vibrant and diverse representation of society, where children learn and grow. We rely on the local community, parents and families to partner with us in their children’s learning journey and encourage open communication.
We all share a responsibility for providing a safe, supportive and productive environment, free from bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence. Parents and carers, and other visitors to our school, support safety by ensuring communication and conduct at school and school activities is respectful. We all have the right to feel safe and be safe at school.
The Department of Education has recently released Connect and Respect, a suite of resources to assist school communities in setting shared and respectful expectations to enable us to continue to work together in the best interests of our children. At Alkimos PS, the overwhelming majority of families already understand this.
This includes when and how to contact the school, what you can expect from us and the behaviours that interfere with teaching and learning. These resources and guidelines will assist us to continue to build upon our culture of connection and engagement, and we will implement them to support our staff to deliver quality education at our school.
You’ll see below that I have included three information posters below that provide further information.
